Bombun: Beginner Tips to Help You Save the Skies

Bombun is an explosive 3D platformer from developer Kekitopu that puts you in control of a bomb-throwing rabbit defending her floating fortress from a mechanized army of drones.

It’s adorable, it’s stylish, and it is way harder than it looks.

If you’re jumping into this Bomberman Hero-inspired adventure for the first time, you’re probably going to blow yourself up a lot.

That’s totally normal.

These beginner tips will help you get your footing across all six floating worlds and take the fight to the villainous Robombun.

Learn Your Full Moveset Early

Bombun’s moveset is deeper than it first appears, and the game doesn’t always spell everything out for you right away.

Spending a few minutes experimenting in the early levels will save you a ton of frustration later on.

Your basic actions include jumping, throwing bombs, and moving around the floating platforms. But there’s more to it than that.

You can charge your bombs to create a Big Bomb with a much larger explosion.

You can roll bombs along the ground to reach spots you can’t throw to directly. And most importantly, you can perform a bomb jump to launch yourself into the air using your own explosion.

Try every ability as soon as you can.

The early stages are forgiving enough to let you experiment without too much punishment.

Get comfortable with the full toolkit before the difficulty ramps up, because later worlds expect you to use everything in your arsenal.

Master the Bomb Jump

If there’s one skill that separates beginners from experienced players, it’s the bomb jump.

This technique lets you use the blast from your own bomb to launch yourself higher and farther than a regular jump allows.

The basic idea is simple. Drop a bomb, jump near it, and let the explosion propel you upward. Timing is everything here.

Bomb jumps are essential for reaching higher platforms, crossing large gaps, and even dodging enemy attacks in a pinch.

Some sections of the game are practically impossible without them, so this isn’t an optional skill.

One important thing to know is that bomb jumps have a refresh timer.

You can’t spam them back to back without waiting for the cooldown. Keeping track of when your next bomb jump is available becomes critical during fast-paced sections, especially in water areas where momentum matters.

There’s no on-screen indicator for the cooldown, so you’ll develop a feel for the timing through practice.

If you’re holding a bomb out and nothing happens, you’re probably still on cooldown.

Watch Your Own Blast Radius

Here’s a fact that every single Bombun player learns the hard way: your own bombs can and will hurt you. It’s easily the most common way beginners die in the early game.

The explosion radius is bigger than you might expect.

When you throw a bomb at an enemy standing right in front of you, there’s a very good chance you’re going to catch yourself in the blast.

The key is spacing. Try to keep a healthy distance between yourself and your bombs whenever possible.

Throw from mid-range rather than point blank, and immediately move away after releasing a bomb.

This is especially important during close-quarters combat.

When enemies are right on top of you, your instinct might be to drop a bomb and hope for the best.

Resist that urge. Instead, create some distance first, then throw. A little patience with your positioning goes a long way toward staying alive.

Use Charged Bombs and Rolling Bombs Strategically

Beyond your standard throw, Bombun has two additional bomb techniques that are easy to overlook but incredibly useful in the right situations.

Charged bombs (also called Big Bombs) are created by holding the bomb button to charge up before releasing. These have a significantly larger blast radius and deal more damage, making them perfect for groups of enemies or tougher obstacles that regular bombs can’t handle.

The tradeoff is that charging takes time, which leaves you vulnerable. Make sure you’re in a safe spot before winding up a Big Bomb. Don’t try to charge one while enemies are closing in on you.

Rolling bombs are the other tool you should be using more often. You can roll a bomb along the ground to send it sliding forward in a straight line. This is great for hitting switches on a delay or getting bombs underneath low gaps that you can’t throw over.

Work With the Fixed Camera, Not Against It

Bombun uses a fixed camera system with preset angles rather than full camera control. You can rotate between a few predefined positions, but you won’t have the freedom to look wherever you want.

This can feel restrictive at first, especially if you’re used to modern 3D platformers with free camera movement. But the game is actually designed around this limitation, and the level design works with the camera rather than against it.

When you’re struggling to judge distance on a jump, try rotating to a different camera angle before committing.

A different perspective can make tricky platforming sections much easier to read.

Depth perception can be tricky on the floating platforms.

If you keep falling off ledges that look easy, switch camera positions and approach the jump from a new angle.

What looks impossible from one view might be straightforward from another.

Take Your Time Exploring Each World

Bombun features six floating worlds filled with sky islands, high-tech strongholds, and plenty of hidden surprises.

It’s tempting to rush straight to the end of each level, but you’ll miss a lot if you do.

Each world contains secret bunnies to discover, and finding them is one of the most rewarding parts of the game.

Keep an eye out for suspicious-looking walls, out-of-the-way platforms, and areas that seem like they might be hiding something.

The game also has a score system that tracks your performance in each level.

Your score resets when you die, so playing carefully and staying alive is more rewarding than rushing through and dying repeatedly. If you care about high scores, a methodical approach beats a reckless one every time.

Don’t Underestimate the Difficulty

Bombun looks like a cute, lighthearted game with its colorful art style and adorable rabbit protagonist.

Do not let that fool you. This game is surprisingly tough, and it will test your platforming skills.

The early levels ease you in gently, but the difficulty ramps up significantly as you progress through the later worlds.

Precision platforming, tight timing, and smart bomb usage all become mandatory rather than optional.

Expect a healthy amount of trial and error.

You’re going to die, and that’s fine.

Each death teaches you something about the level layout, enemy patterns, or the timing of a particular jump.

The game rewards patience and persistence over raw speed.

If you’re getting stuck on a particular section, take a short break and come back to it.

Platformers like this are notorious for feeling impossible one minute and then suddenly clicking the next time you try.

Tips for Boss Fights Against Robombun

Robombun is your main antagonist and former friend turned ruthless villain.

You’ll face off against Robombun’s forces throughout the game, and these boss encounters demand everything you’ve learned up to that point.

The most important thing in boss fights is positioning.

Stay mobile, keep your distance, and look for safe windows to throw your bombs. Trying to rush a boss down with constant aggression usually gets you killed fast.

Bomb jumps are incredibly useful during boss encounters.

Use them to dodge incoming attacks, reposition yourself on the arena, and reach safe spots when the boss is unleashing dangerous patterns. If you haven’t mastered bomb jumps by the time you hit your first boss, you’re going to have a rough time.

Pay close attention to attack patterns.

Every boss has tells before their big moves, and learning to read those tells gives you plenty of time to react.

Most bosses follow a cycle of attacking, pausing, and then attacking again. The pauses are your openings to deal damage.

Keep Your Drivers Updated

This last tip is a quick technical one, but it’s important.

Bombun is built on the Godot engine and requires Vulkan API support to run properly.

AMD GPU users in particular should make sure they have the latest optional drivers installed from AMD’s website.

Some players have reported graphical glitches that are completely fixed by updating to the newest driver version.

The good news is that Bombun is Steam Deck verified and runs well on portable hardware.

It also has full controller support, which is the recommended way to play. A controller gives you much better precision for the platforming sections compared to keyboard and mouse.

The game supports 12 languages including English, French, German, Japanese, and Korean. Steam Cloud saves are also supported, so your progress syncs between devices automatically.
