Gujian 3 Research Guide - All Correct Answers & Requirements

I just finished my playthrough of the excellent game Gujian 3 (read our review here). There isn’t much in the way of guides or faqs online for this game and since I put together a little fishing and exploring guide I figured I’d make one for research too since research can be a bit frustrating.

In the Lotuscape you have a little desk where you can research different things. Once you successfully research a topic it’ll unlock one or more crafting recipes.

There’s sort of a little mini game here for researching things and it’s kind of fun but can be frustrating without a guide.

First you need to select your artisans and they need to have a high enough ability to research the item. You can also select up to 3 additional helper artisans as well.

When an artisan does research they’ll lose HP and if their HP is too low they can’t craft or research anything. It’ll say they’re exhausted. You can cure their exhaustion by feeding them their favorite foods.

Researching a topic also takes a little bit of materials and money. If you fail these are not returned. Since it’s so easy to fail due to no fault of your own this is why a guide would be helpful.

Artisans, including the helper ones all have abilities as well. Some will partially restore the lost HP after the research, some will increase the research ability points total to make it more likely to succeed and some will give partial rebates on the materials, money and even bonus EXP.

Unlocking Research Topics

As you invite more artisans to the Lotuscape you’ll unlock more research topics. Often when you level an artisan up to level 2 that’ll unlock additional research topics too.

You can level up artisans by having them participate in research or just crafting items.

Each one can reach a maximum level of 2 so it doesn’t take long to get them leveled up.

The Research Mini Game

Once you’ve got all your artisans selected and you start the research you have to do a little mini game.

You play as Persimmon and your main artisan or artisans will need help every few seconds or so. You’ll need to watch them to see which ones have an exclamation mark over them, that’s the one who needs help. You’ll kind of have to watch everyone if it’s a recipe that involves 2 or 3 artisans.

Then you run up to them, hit the button and help them with what they need. There are a couple different activities here you’ll do.

Fetch Water

This is easy, you just run to the water bucket or trough and tap the A button repeatedly until your thing is full and bring it back to the artisan.

Cut Wood

This is a bit harder you’ll have to divide a piece of wood up into equal parts. If it’s just 2 or 4 parts then that’s somewhat easy, just move the cursor to the middle, cut there and then you can eyeball the middle of the other two pieces fairly easy.

You have a decent amount of extra room so it doesn’t have to be super perfect.

If they ask you to cut it into 3 equal parts that’s pretty much the only I time I ever had trouble here.

Hammer Nails

This is also fairly easy, a cursor will move back and forth and you just have to hit the A button when it’s over the green area. I found it’s easiest to time if you hit A right before it enters the green area.

Grab a Tool

Sometimes they’ll ask you to bring them a specific tool or object. Here you just have to run up to the tool, press the button to pick it up and bring it back.

Sometimes though they’re a bit vague with what they ask for which is where this guide will help.

Bring Items

Here they’ll ask you to go to a storage chest and bring them back a specific item or items. It’ll cycle through the different items, hit A to grab one and B to leave it behind. If you miss one it fails.

Answer a Question

This one is very frustrating without a guide. The artisan will ask you a question like “What’s the best way to do this step” and then you have to select an answer out of 3 multiple choice options.

There’s no way to know which is right either other than trial and error. When you fail you lose your materials and HP anyways which is why this part seems kind of unfair to me.

Other Notes

Sometimes before you start research it’ll tell you that the total ability level is too low and it won’t succeed. That’s what the difficulty rating is referring to. As long as you have 4 artisans selected you should never have a problem. I never did if I had 4 people selected, I always got the full 100% as long as I did each step correctly.

If you’re worried about the ability points being too low you can always try adding two of the same type of artisan. Like if it asks for a carpenter select two different carpenters for roughly double the ability points and you should have no problem.
