If you own a mechanical keyboard, there’s a good chance you’ve heard it. That sharp, metallic ringing sound that echoes after every keystroke. That’s keyboard ping, and once you notice it, you can’t un-hear it.
Ping happens when the springs inside your switches vibrate against the housing, sending resonant vibrations through the plate and case.
The sound gets amplified by hollow spaces, thin aluminum plates, and poor case design that lets metal vibrate freely.
The most common fix is stuffing foam inside the case. But foam isn’t the only option, and sometimes it doesn’t even fully solve the problem.
There are plenty of effective ways to kill keyboard ping without using foam. Let’s walk through them from easiest to most involved.
Use a Desk Mat
This is the absolute easiest fix and it costs you nothing if you already have a desk mat lying around.
Placing your keyboard on a thick desk mat makes a surprisingly big difference because it absorbs the vibrations that would otherwise bounce off your hard desk surface and amplify the ping.
A hard desk essentially acts like a sounding board, reflecting all that resonant energy right back into the keyboard.
A desk mat breaks that feedback loop by absorbing vibrations before they can bounce around.
For the best results, look for a thicker desk mat made from dense rubber or neoprene. Some people even stack two desk mats for extra dampening.
It won’t eliminate ping entirely on its own, but you should notice a significant reduction right away.
Also, make sure your keyboard is sitting flat.
Typing with the keyboard feet extended raises the board at an angle, making it less stable and increasing vibration.
Keep those feet folded down for a quieter experience.

Try the Tape Mod (Tempest Mod)
The Tempest Tape Mod is one of the most popular keyboard modifications in the hobby, and for good reason. It’s cheap, easy, completely reversible, and it makes a huge impact on sound quality.
All you need is a roll of painter’s tape and a screwdriver.
Open up your keyboard case, then apply two to three layers of painter’s tape across the back of the PCB (printed circuit board).
The tape adds mass to the PCB, dampening high-frequency vibrations that cause that hollow, pingy sound. It also prevents sound waves from echoing inside the case cavity.
The result is a noticeably deeper and poppier sound with less metallic ringing.
Many people describe the difference as going from a cheap, hollow keyboard to something that sounds significantly more premium.
Always use non-conductive tape like painter’s tape or artist’s tape. If your keyboard has an internal battery (wireless boards), leave the area around the battery completely clear because tape over a battery can be a fire hazard. And if you don’t like the result, just peel the tape off. No damage done.
Do the Force Break Mod
If you have an aluminum keyboard case (especially a two-piece design), the Force Break Mod is one of the most effective ways to eliminate metallic ping.
When two pieces of metal sit directly against each other, vibrations travel freely between them, creating that sustained ringing sound.
To do this, apply small pieces of electrical tape, masking tape, or thin Poron strips around the screw holes and contact points where the top and bottom case pieces meet.
You’re creating a “break” in the metal-to-metal contact so vibrations have to pass through a dampening layer instead.
This mod is particularly effective on budget aluminum boards. It takes about 10 minutes, costs almost nothing, and the improvement can be dramatic. The keyboard should sound noticeably more solid and less ringy afterward.
The Force Break Mod pairs beautifully with the Tape Mod. Together, they tackle two separate sources of ping: the PCB vibrations and the case resonance.
Lube Your Springs
Sometimes the ping isn’t coming from the case at all. It’s coming from the springs inside your switches.
When springs are slightly warped or making poor contact with the housing, they ring every time you press a key. Lubing your springs is the most direct way to fix this.
The easiest method is called bag lubing.
Remove all your springs, drop them into a plastic bag with a few drops of lubricant, and shake until everything is evenly coated.
The lube fills in tiny gaps where the spring contacts the housing, preventing the metallic vibration.
Krytox GPL 105 is the community favorite for bag lubing because it’s a thin oil that distributes evenly. Krytox 205g0 also works if applied lightly, though it’s a thicker grease better suited for hand-lubing individual springs.
With a hot-swappable keyboard, this process is straightforward. Pull out your switches, open them up, bag lube the springs, and reassemble.
For soldered switches, you can carefully apply a tiny amount of lube through the stem opening without full disassembly. It’s not as thorough, but it still helps.
Beyond killing ping, lubed springs make your switches feel smoother and sound cleaner overall.
It’s one of those mods where once you try it, you never want to go back.

Install O-Rings on Your Switches
O-rings are small rubber rings that fit around the stem of your keycaps.
When you press a key all the way down, the O-ring compresses and cushions the impact instead of letting plastic slam against plastic. Less impact force means less vibration and less ping.
This is one of the most beginner-friendly mods because it requires zero disassembly.
Just pull off your keycaps, slip an O-ring onto each stem, and press the keycaps back on. The whole process takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
When shopping, pay attention to thickness and hardness. A good starting point is 1.5mm to 2mm thick with 40A to 50A hardness.
This gives you noticeable dampening without making the keys feel mushy or dramatically reducing travel distance.
O-rings won’t fully eliminate spring ping since they address bottom-out noise rather than spring vibration.
But they reduce the overall impact force that triggers case and plate resonance, which helps bring the ping level down.
Swap to a Polycarbonate Plate
Your keyboard’s plate material plays a massive role in how ping-prone your board is.
Most stock keyboards ship with aluminum plates, which are rigid, resonant, and excellent at transmitting high-frequency vibrations.
Polycarbonate (PC) plates are the polar opposite.
They’re more flexible, less dense, and naturally absorb high-frequency energy instead of amplifying it. Swapping from aluminum to PC often results in a dramatically deeper, more muted sound with significantly less ringing.
The catch is that plate swaps aren’t possible on every keyboard.
You’ll need a board that supports interchangeable plates, which is more common in custom keyboards than mainstream prebuilts.
Check whether your manufacturer or aftermarket sellers offer a PC plate for your specific model.
If a full plate swap isn’t an option, some enthusiasts use plate dampening strips or thin material between the switches and the plate for a similar (though less dramatic) effect.

Switch to Silent Switches
If ping is still driving you crazy after trying everything else, the most thorough solution is to replace your switches entirely with silent variants.
Silent switches use built-in rubber dampeners on the stem that cushion both the bottom-out and top-out, eliminating the sharp impacts that trigger case and plate resonance.
Popular silent switch options include Cherry MX Silent Red, Cherry MX Silent Black, Gateron Silent Yellows, and Zilent V2 switches. Each has a different feel, but they all share that near-silent bottom-out characteristic.
With a hot-swappable keyboard, switching is a breeze.
Just pull out the old switches and push in the new ones. If your board has soldered switches, this becomes a much bigger project that may not be worth the effort just for noise reduction.
Silent switches won’t change the resonance characteristics of your case or plate.
But by drastically reducing keystroke noise and impact force, they give ping far less energy to work with.
Combine Multiple Mods for the Best Results
Here’s the truth about keyboard ping: there’s rarely a single magic fix. Ping comes from multiple sources, so the most effective approach is layering several mods together.
Start with a desk mat for zero-effort vibration reduction.
Then do the Tape Mod and Force Break Mod together since they address different resonance sources and only require opening the case once.
If spring ping persists, lube your springs for the most targeted fix.
The O-ring mod is a quick add-on that pairs well with everything else.
A polycarbonate plate swap or silent switches are bigger investments, but they make the most dramatic difference if you’re chasing the quietest possible experience.
The best part is that almost all of these mods are completely reversible.
Peel off the tape, remove the O-rings, swap the switches back. You can experiment freely without permanently altering your board.
So pick a couple of these fixes, spend an afternoon tinkering, and enjoy a typing experience that’s cleaner, quieter, and way more satisfying.
