Unicorn Overlord features over 60 unique classes spread across the five nations of Fevrith, and understanding how they work is the key to building an army that can handle anything the game throws at you.
Every recruitable character is locked into a specific class that determines their stats, skills, equipment, and role on the battlefield. You can’t change a character’s class, but many classes can be promoted to a stronger advanced version.
This guide covers everything you need to know about the class system, including how promotion works, which classes to prioritize, the matchup dynamics that drive combat, and a complete list of every class in the game with links to detailed individual guides.
How Class Promotion Works
Many base classes in Unicorn Overlord can be promoted to an advanced class at any liberated fort. Promotion is one of the biggest power spikes in the game, and understanding how it works will help you plan your army effectively.
To unlock promotions, you need to reach Renown Rank B. Once you hit that threshold, Josef will notify you that the “Promote” option is now available at forts. From there, you select a character and spend Honors to promote them. The Honors cost varies by class, typically ranging from 25 to 50.
Promotion gives you several immediate benefits. Your character gets a stat boost across the board, including HP, attack, and defense.
They gain +1 AP and +1 PP, which means more skill activations per battle. They unlock new skills that are often the most powerful abilities in their kit. Some promotions also grant access to new equipment types (like shields) or change the character’s movement type (like Alain gaining a mount).
Not every class has a promotion. Classes like Elven Fencer, Werewolf, Feathersword, and several unique classes are standalone with no advanced version. For these classes, power scaling comes entirely from leveling, equipment, and tactics.
Who to Promote First
You’ll earn Honors throughout the game, but you won’t have enough to promote everyone immediately. Prioritizing your promotions makes a big difference.
Alain (Lord to High Lord) should be your first promotion, no question. The High Lord class gives Alain a mount, changing his movement type from infantry to cavalry. This dramatically speeds up overworld movement for your main character’s unit, which you’ll control constantly. The combat benefits are excellent too, but the mobility alone makes this the top priority.
Scarlett (Priestess to High Priestess) is a strong second pick. The High Priestess gains Resurrection, which can revive fallen allies during battle. That safety net is incredibly valuable during difficult fights.
After those two, promote whichever classes you use most in your main combat units. Classes that gain especially impactful skills from promotion include Fighters (Provoke passive), Landsknechts (Bastard’s Cross and Bull Force), Berserkers (Cyclone hitting all enemies), and Bishops (Mass Heal).
One important tip: save some Honors for Renown Rank A. When you reach Rank A, you unlock the ability to expand your units from four members to five, at a cost of 200 Honors per expansion. Adding a fifth slot to a few key units is often more impactful than promoting every character, so don’t spend all your Honors on promotions as soon as you get them.
Understanding Class Types and Roles
Every class in Unicorn Overlord falls into one of three movement types: Infantry, Cavalry, and Flying. The unit leader’s class determines the entire unit’s movement type on the overworld, which is a critical factor when choosing leaders.
Infantry is the most common movement type. Infantry units move at a standard pace, with slightly increased speed on roads. Most frontline fighters, archers, casters, and healers are infantry.
Cavalry units are significantly faster than infantry, especially on roads. However, their speed drops in forests and rough terrain. Knights, Great Knights, Dark Knights, and the promoted High Lord all have cavalry movement. Setting a cavalry character as your unit leader makes the entire unit move at cavalry speed.
Flying units ignore terrain entirely, soaring over forests, mountains, water, and traps. Gryphon Knights, Wyvern Knights, angel classes from Albion, and Wereowls all have flight. A flying leader gives the entire unit flight, which is an enormous tactical advantage on maps with difficult terrain.
Every class also has a Leader Effect that applies when that character leads a unit. Common leader effects include Ranged Assist (provides ranged support for allied fights), Healing Assist (provides healing support), Magick Assist (provides magick damage support), Flight (ignore terrain), Quick Rest (faster resting), Barrier Breaker (destroy gates and barricades), Resist Ranged Assist (reduce ranged assist damage), and Morale Boost (extra Valor Points). Choosing the right leader for each unit based on their leader effect is a key part of army building.
Within combat, classes are designed for either the front row or the back row.
Tanky classes like Hoplites, Fighters, and Knights belong up front to absorb damage. Fragile classes like Wizards, Clerics, Hunters, and Shamans belong in the back where they can contribute without taking hits. Some classes like Soldiers and Warriors are flexible and can work in either row depending on the unit composition.

Class Strengths and Weaknesses: The Matchup Triangle
Combat in Unicorn Overlord revolves around class matchups. Knowing what beats what is essential for deploying the right units against the right enemies.
Armored classes (Fighters, Hoplites) have excellent physickal defense and can block most physical attacks. They’re countered by Warriors and Breakers, whose anti-armor skills ignore defense entirely. They’re also devastated by magick attacks from Wizards, Witches, and other casters, since spells bypass guard and physickal defense.
Cavalry (Knights, Great Knights, Dark Knights) deal bonus damage against infantry but are countered by anti-cavalry skills from Soldiers and Sergeants. Flying units like Gryphon Knights also destroy cavalry with bonus anti-mounted damage.
Flying units (Gryphon Knights, Wyvern Knights, angel classes) have excellent evasion against ground attacks and dominate cavalry. They’re hard countered by Hunters, Arbalists, and Elven Archers, all of which deal bonus anti-flying damage.
Evasive classes (Thieves, Werefoxes) dodge most physickal attacks but are completely shut down by truestrike attacks from Hunters and Swordfighters that bypass evasion.
Casters (Wizards, Witches, Shamans) bypass physickal defense with magick but are countered by Radiant Knights and Feathershields who have high magick defense and can reflect or barrier spells. They’re also fragile targets for Hunters who act first thanks to high initiative.
The general rule: always check what classes your enemy is fielding before you engage, and pick a unit with favorable matchups. Sending a Hoplite against Warriors is a death sentence, but sending that same Hoplite against Hunters is a walk in the park.

Tips for Building a Balanced Army
Unicorn Overlord gives you enormous freedom in how you build your units, but certain principles will make your army dramatically more effective.
Always have a healer. At least two or three of your active units should include a Cleric, Priestess, Featherstaff, or Wereowl. Fights of attrition are common, and sustained healing is the difference between winning and retreating.
Always have anti-armor. You will face Hoplites and Legionnaires constantly throughout the game. Having at least one unit with a Warrior, Breaker, or magick caster ensures you can crack open armored frontlines.
Always have anti-air. Flying enemies are some of the most dangerous in the game. Keep at least one unit with a Hunter, Arbalist, or Elven Archer to handle Gryphon Knights and Wyvern Knights before they tear your cavalry apart.
Cover the magick gap. Armored tanks like Hoplites and Fighters are incredible against physical damage but crumble to magick. Pair them with Radiant Knights or Feathershields to cover the magick defense weakness.
Set your tactics properly. The tactics system is where the real depth of Unicorn Overlord lives. Set conditions for every skill so your characters use the right ability against the right target. Reactive heals should trigger when allies take damage, debuffs should fire before allies attack, and offensive skills should target the most dangerous enemy first.
Use leader effects strategically. A flying leader gives your whole unit flight mobility. A Healing Assist leader passively heals nearby allies. A Morale Boost leader accelerates your valor generation. Pick leaders based on what the unit needs most, not just who has the best stats.
Build variety across your army. Don’t build five identical units. Spread your class types so you have answers for every situation, whether that’s cavalry charges, flying assaults, caster barrages, or armored walls. The more diverse your army, the more adaptable you’ll be.
