The Housecarl is Unicorn Overlord’s offensive axe-wielding infantry class, a hard-hitting bruiser whose attacks shred enemy defense and set up the rest of your team for massive damage.
Once promoted to Viking, the class gains shield access, row-wide attacks, and a powerful team buff that kicks in at the start of every battle.
If you want a unit that softens up the enemy for your team to clean up, the Housecarl/Viking is built for exactly that.
Strengths
The Housecarl’s defining feature is defense shredding.
Their attacks lower enemy physickal defense, which means every ally hitting that target afterward deals significantly more damage.
In a game where some enemies are incredibly tanky, having a dedicated armor softener is invaluable.
Their leader effect, Barrier Breaker, lets the unit destroy gates and barricades on the overworld more easily. This is situationally very useful on maps with chokepoints and destructible obstacles.
After promotion, Vikings gain access to row-hitting attacks and the War Horn passive, which buffs the entire party’s attack at the start of battle.
War Horn is one of the best passive skills in the game because it benefits every other member of the unit unconditionally.
The valor skill Vitalize restores 2 stamina to a unit, which keeps your forces fighting longer during extended map engagements without needing to rest.
Weaknesses
Housecarls have low defense and relatively low HP for a melee class.
Before promotion, they can’t equip shields, which makes them quite fragile when placed in the front row.
You’ll generally want them in the back row hitting through columns, or you’ll need a strong tank up front to keep them alive.
They also lack any evasion or magick defense to speak of.
If enemy casters target them, they’ll go down fast.
And while their offense is excellent, they’re not effective against evasive enemies like Thieves, their accuracy isn’t great against high-evasion targets.
Key Skills and How to Use Them
Smash is the starting active skill. It attacks a single enemy and reduces their physickal defense. Simple but effective, use it early to soften up the biggest threat.
Rolling Axe (level 10) hits all enemies in a row and reduces their defense. This is where the Housecarl starts becoming a real powerhouse, debuffing entire rows for your team to exploit.
Wide Breaker (level 20, Viking only) is the upgraded row attack with even higher potency and defense reduction. Devastating when paired with follow-up damage dealers.
Parting Blow is the starting passive, it deals a follow-up attack at the end of battle, which can sometimes finish off a weakened enemy or apply one last defense debuff.
Frenzied Strike (level 15) gives a chance for the Housecarl to strike twice, doubling their damage output on that action.
War Horn (level 25, Viking only) is the crown jewel. At the start of battle, it grants an attack buff to the entire row. This is incredibly powerful and benefits every single ally in the unit. Combined with other start-of-battle buffs, your team can enter combat with a massive stat advantage.
Promotion to Viking
Promotion to Viking is highly recommended.
The biggest gains are shield access (significantly improving survivability), the Wide Breaker active skill, and the War Horn passive.
The stat increases to attack and HP are also substantial.
War Horn alone makes this promotion a priority if you’re using a Housecarl in any of your main units.
The ability to buff your entire row’s attack at the start of every fight is a force multiplier that benefits the whole team.
This is a mid-to-high priority promotion.
Best Team Compositions and Tactics
Viking + Gladiator/Berserker is a devastating combo. War Horn buffs the Gladiator’s already powerful row attacks, and the defense shred from the Viking’s attacks means the Gladiator hits even harder. Stack them behind a Hoplite for a wrecking ball of a unit.
Viking + Soldier/Sergeant pairs nicely because the Soldier’s Keen Call guarantees crits, and the Viking’s War Horn buffs attack power. The Soldier’s column attacks also benefit from the defense debuffs the Viking applies.
Viking + Swordfighter lets the Swordfighter deal massive crit damage to defense-shredded enemies while the Viking provides raw attack buffs.
Place the Housecarl/Viking in the back row behind a tank. Set Smash or Rolling Axe to fire first to apply defense debuffs before your allies attack, and let War Horn and Frenzied Strike activate freely.
Characters Who Use This Class
Aubin is the only named Housecarl you can recruit. He joins early in the game during the tutorial missions in Cornia, making him available for nearly the entire playthrough. He’s a solid offensive pick with good attack growth.
Generic Housecarl mercenaries can also be hired at forts. Since Aubin is your only named option, you may want a mercenary Housecarl if you want this class in multiple units.
Final Thoughts
The Housecarl/Viking is one of the best force multipliers in Unicorn Overlord.
Between defense shredding that makes enemies vulnerable and War Horn that makes your allies stronger, this class amplifies your entire unit’s damage output. It’s not a tank and it’s not a solo carry, it’s the class that makes everyone else better.
Definitely promote to Viking as soon as you can, and pair it with hard-hitting allies who can exploit all those debuffs and buffs.
