The Sellsword is Unicorn Overlord’s mercenary class, a heavy-hitting two-handed swordfighter who thrives on counterattacks and raw physickal damage.

Once promoted to Landsknecht, the class gains shield access and some of the most devastating offensive skills in the game.

If you want a brawler who punishes enemies for daring to attack, this is the class.

Strengths

Sellswords hit incredibly hard.

Their physickal attack is among the highest of any infantry class, and their counterattack-focused skills mean that enemies who swing at them often regret it.

Heavy Slash deals massive single-target damage, and once you get Killing Chain at level 10, you can string together multiple hits.

After promotion, Landsknechts gain shield access, which dramatically improves their survivability.

They also unlock Bastard’s Cross, one of the hardest-hitting skills in the entire game,  it deals bonus damage based on the enemy’s remaining HP, making it devastating against full-health targets.

The valor skill Summon Warriors calls in a temporary mercenary unit on the overworld, giving you extra forces during tricky maps.

After promotion, it becomes Summon Archers, which provides ranged support instead.

Their leader effect, Greater Garrison, boosts recovery when resting at garrisoned locations.

Weaknesses

Before promotion, Sellswords can’t equip shields, leaving them quite vulnerable despite their offensive power.

Their defense is mediocre without a shield, and they lack any evasion or Parry-style defensive skills.

Sellswords struggle against Thieves.

High-evasion enemies can dodge their powerful but inaccurate swings, and Sellswords don’t have truestrike to guarantee hits.

They also have no ranged capability and no support skills whatsoever, this is a pure damage class with zero utility.

Key Skills and How to Use Them

Heavy Slash is the starting active, a powerful single-target attack. Simple but devastating with high potency.

Killing Chain (level 10) hits multiple times, stacking damage quickly. Excellent for finishing off weakened enemies or dealing sustained damage.

Bastard’s Cross (level 20, Landsknecht only) is the premium skill. It deals massive damage with bonus potency against enemies with high HP, making it ideal for opening attacks against full-health targets.

Following Slash is a passive that triggers a follow-up attack when the Sellsword hits an enemy, granting 1 PP. This PP generation keeps your passives active.

Vengeful Guard (level 25, Landsknecht only) triggers a counterattack when the Landsknecht successfully guards, turning defense into offense.

Bull Force (level 30, Landsknecht only) grants unguardable attacks to the Landsknecht’s row, meaning enemy guards and shields become useless. This is exceptional against armored frontlines.

Promotion to Landsknecht

Promotion is a huge power spike.

Shield access fixes the class’s biggest survivability problem, Bastard’s Cross gives you one of the best damage skills in the game, and Bull Force makes your entire row’s attacks unguardable.

This is a high-priority promotion for any Sellsword you’re actively using.

Best Team Compositions and Tactics

Landsknecht + Hoplite puts a wall in front of your damage dealer. The Hoplite absorbs everything while the Landsknecht deals devastating damage from behind.

Landsknecht + Viking is a killer combo, War Horn buffs the Landsknecht’s already massive attack, and the Viking’s defense shred makes Bastard’s Cross hit even harder.

Landsknecht + Cleric keeps your heavy hitter alive through sustained fights.

Set Bastard’s Cross to target full-HP enemies and Killing Chain for finishing weakened targets. Let Following Slash and Vengeful Guard activate freely.

Characters Who Use This Class

Berenice is a missable Sellsword recruited through specific conditions during her encounter. She’s a strong offensive character with good base stats.

Jeremy is another missable Sellsword tied to an execution choice, spare him to recruit later.

Magellan joins during the Drakenhold desert missions. He’s a reliable mid-game recruit.

Generic Sellsword mercenaries are available at forts.

Final Thoughts

The Sellsword/Landsknecht is pure, unapologetic damage.

Bastard’s Cross is one of the hardest-hitting skills in Unicorn Overlord, Bull Force removes enemy guarding entirely, and the class’s counterattack tools punish enemies for fighting back.

Promote to Landsknecht as soon as possible for the shield and the devastating skill upgrades.

Pair with a tank and watch this class demolish everything.
