The Werebear is a bestral tank class from Bastorias, the bear-folk equivalent of a Hoplite with massive physickal defense, a huge shield, and the ability to protect allies from harm.
They’re the bestral answer to armored frontline defense, with the added bonus of Nightwalk mobility.
Strengths
Werebears have excellent physickal defense and high HP, making them formidable tanks who can absorb enormous amounts of physical damage.
Their defensive capabilities are comparable to Hoplites, with similar ally-protecting skills.
They carry massive shields and can guard against incoming attacks, reducing damage taken substantially.
Like all bestral classes, they gain Nightwalk for enhanced nighttime mobility. This gives them an edge over Hoplites on night maps where the mobility bonus makes a noticeable difference.
Their valor skill Bear Crush knocks back and immobilizes enemy units, providing overworld crowd control that can disrupt enemy formations.
Weaknesses
Low accuracy means their attacks frequently miss, especially against evasive targets. Their offensive contribution is limited.
Like Hoplites, they have terrible magick defense. Casters will shred them.
Warriors and anti-armor skills ignore their high physickal defense, making them vulnerable to the same counters as Hoplites.
Slow initiative means they act late, and their attacks are inaccurate enough that offensive skills often feel wasted.
No promotion limits their ceiling.
Key Skills and How to Use Them
Shield Wall provides a defensive stance that increases guard rate and protects allies.
Heavy Slam is a powerful but inaccurate melee attack. Use it against slow, non-evasive targets.
Cover intercepts attacks aimed at allies, similar to Heavy Cover.
Guard Boost passively increases guard rate, stacking with shields for near-guaranteed blocks.
Best Team Compositions and Tactics
Werebear + Wizard/Witch puts a physical wall in front of a caster, covering each other’s weaknesses.
Werebear + Radiant Knight covers the Werebear’s magick weakness.
Werebear + other bestrals for thematic Bastorias compositions with Nightwalk synergy.
Position in the front row. Focus on defensive skills and protecting allies rather than attacking.
Characters Who Use This Class
Bertrand is a missable Werebear, originally presented as mutually exclusive with Govil during “To Resist or To Yield,” but you can recruit both by talking to each and then fighting them together.
Final Thoughts
The Werebear is a solid physickal tank with bestral flavor.
It does the same job as a Hoplite (absorb physical damage and protect allies) but with Nightwalk mobility as a bonus.
The accuracy issues limit offensive contribution, but that’s not what you’re bringing a Werebear for.
If you need a tank for a bestral-themed army or night-focused maps, the Werebear delivers.
