Using a DualShock 4 on PC is a pretty common setup, and for the most part it works well.

But a lot of people run into the same problem: the controller feels slow.

There’s a noticeable delay between pressing a button and something happening on screen.

It’s not huge, but it’s enough to affect fast-paced games and make everything feel slightly off.

The good news is that DS4 input lag on PC is almost always fixable. It usually comes down to a combination of connection method, software, and a few system settings. Once you dial them in, the controller should feel responsive and tight.

Here’s every fix worth trying, roughly in order of impact.

 

Switch from Bluetooth to wired (USB) if you haven’t already

This is the single biggest fix for most people.

Bluetooth introduces inherent latency.

The DS4’s Bluetooth implementation adds roughly 8–16ms of input delay compared to a wired connection and that’s under ideal conditions.

If you have interference, distance, or a busy wireless environment, it gets worse.

Plug the DS4 directly into your PC via a USB-A to micro-USB cable. If the input lag improves immediately, Bluetooth was your problem. You can stop there.

PS4 controller

Use DS4Windows (and make sure it’s configured correctly)

DS4Windows is the most widely used software for running a DS4 on PC, and it’s genuinely excellent but some of its default settings aren’t optimized for low latency.

If you’re not using DS4Windows yet: download it from ds4-windows.com and install it. It handles controller mapping, emulation mode, and a bunch of latency-relevant settings in one place.

If you are using it already, check these specific settings:

Set the controller to use XInput emulation

In DS4Windows, the DS4 can emulate an Xbox controller (XInput) or use its native HID mode.

XInput is generally better supported by PC games and introduces less overhead in most titles.

Go to Profiles → Edit Profile and make sure you’re using XInput as the output controller type.

Turn on “UDP Server” only if you’re actively using it

The UDP server in DS4Windows (used for motion and gyro features) adds a small processing overhead. If you’re not using gyro/motion in your games, turn it off.

Go to Settings → DS4Windows Server and disable it.

Check the polling rate

DS4Windows allows you to configure how frequently the controller is polled. Make sure it’s set to 1ms (1000Hz) if the option is available in your version. A higher polling interval means slower input detection.

 

If using Bluetooth, switch to a dedicated USB Bluetooth adapter

The Bluetooth radio built into most motherboards is not optimized for low-latency controller input. It’s designed for general peripherals, audio streaming, and other tasks that aren’t latency-sensitive.

A dedicated USB Bluetooth adapter (particularly one with Bluetooth 4.0 or 5.0 support and a good chip) can meaningfully reduce Bluetooth latency compared to the onboard adapter.

The DS4 uses Bluetooth 2.1 internally, but a newer adapter with proper low-energy handling tends to produce more stable, lower-latency connections even with older devices.

Also: if you’re using Bluetooth, remove the DS4’s batteries or make sure it’s in a power state that doesn’t reduce the connection speed.

Some power-saving behaviors can throttle Bluetooth responsiveness.

 

Disable Steam Input if you’re not using it

Steam has its own controller input layer called Steam Input, and it can add a frame or two of latency when running on top of DS4Windows or native DS4 support.

You may have it enabled without realizing it because Steam enables it by default for many controllers.

To check:

  1. Open Steam and go to Settings → Controller
  2. Find PlayStation Controller Support (or your specific controller)
  3. Set it to Disabled if you’re already using DS4Windows for mapping

Having both DS4Windows and Steam Input active at the same time creates a double-processing situation that adds unnecessary delay. Pick one and disable the other.

Check your in-game graphics settings, V-Sync is often the real culprit

This one catches a lot of people off guard.

V-Sync, when enabled in-game, buffers frames to synchronize with your monitor’s refresh rate.

That buffering adds input lag, sometimes a lot of it, often 2–4 frames depending on the implementation.

On a 60Hz monitor that’s potentially 33–67ms of added delay. That’s enough to make any controller feel sluggish regardless of connection type.

Turn off V-Sync in-game, especially for fast-paced titles. If you need screen tearing control, use:

  • NVIDIA Fast Sync (NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings)
  • AMD Enhanced Sync (AMD Software → Gaming → Global Graphics)
  • An in-game FPS cap set just below your monitor’s refresh rate
  • G-Sync or FreeSync if your monitor supports it

Any of those options provides tearing control without the input buffering penalty that traditional V-Sync introduces.

Enable “Low Latency Mode” in your GPU control panel

Both NVIDIA and AMD have settings specifically designed to reduce input latency in games.

NVIDIA: Reflex / Low Latency Mode

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel
  2. Go to Manage 3D Settings → Low Latency Mode
  3. Set it to Ultra

This reduces the pre-rendered frame queue, meaning the GPU starts rendering frames closer to when you actually input something. It has a real effect and is particularly noticeable in controller-driven games.

Some games also have NVIDIA Reflex built in. If you see that option in a game’s settings, enable it. It does a similar thing but with more game-engine awareness.

AMD: Anti-Lag

In AMD Software (Adrenalin), navigate to Gaming → Global Graphics and enable Radeon Anti-Lag. It serves the same purpose: reducing the gap between input and rendered output.

 

Check your USB port and cable quality

This sounds minor but it genuinely matters in some cases.

Use a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port directly on your motherboard, not a front-panel header, not a USB hub, not a dock.

Front-panel USB headers can have slightly higher latency or power inconsistencies that affect controller polling.

Also: use a good quality, data-capable USB cable.

Some micro-USB cables are charge-only and won’t work for data at all.

Others are technically functional but have poor shielding that can cause erratic input. If you’re using a cheap or old cable, swap it for a quality data cable and re-test.

 

Disable “Enhance Pointer Precision” in Windows (for mouse, but check for controller overlap)

This is less relevant for pure controller use, but if you’re using DS4Windows with any mouse/cursor emulation features enabled, Windows pointer settings can interfere. Go to Control Panel → Mouse → Pointer Options and uncheck Enhance Pointer Precision.

Close background applications that hog CPU

Input polling happens on the CPU, and if your CPU is heavily loaded by background tasks, controller inputs can be processed less frequently or less consistently.

Before gaming:

  • Close browsers with dozens of tabs
  • Pause cloud sync services (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive)
  • Disable background update services temporarily
  • Close Discord’s video previews or screen sharing if not needed

This isn’t a dramatic fix on modern hardware, but on older or mid-range CPUs it can make a noticeable difference in input consistency.

 

If all else fails, test with the controller in native mode (no DS4Windows)

Sometimes DS4Windows itself can be the source of issues, particularly if it’s an outdated version, has a corrupted profile, or is conflicting with another input layer.

To test:

  1. Close DS4Windows entirely
  2. Connect the DS4 via USB
  3. Test in a game that natively supports DualShock controllers (like many Steam games)

If it feels better without DS4Windows, try uninstalling and reinstalling DS4Windows with a fresh profile. If it feels the same or worse, DS4Windows isn’t the issue.

 

Quick checklist

If you want the fast version:

  1. Switch to USB (biggest single fix)
  2. Use DS4Windows with XInput output, UDP server off, polling rate at 1ms
  3. Disable Steam Input if using DS4Windows
  4. Turn off V-Sync in-game; use Fast Sync, a frame cap, or G-Sync/FreeSync instead
  5. Enable Low Latency Mode / Ultra in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Anti-Lag
  6. Use a direct motherboard USB port, not a hub or front-panel header
  7. Use a quality data cable
  8. Close heavy background apps before gaming

Most people find that combining fixes 1 through 4 gets the controller feeling genuinely tight. The rest are smaller gains, but they add up, especially if you’re using Bluetooth and can’t go wired.
