If you’ve ever tweaked your FPS, enabled a “performance mode,” and still felt like your mouse or controller has a tiny layer of syrup on it… that’s latency.
And while in-game settings matter a lot, NVIDIA Control Panel can absolutely influence how responsive your games feel, especially in competitive shooters, fast action games, or anything where you’re flicking, parrying, or timing inputs tightly.
This guide covers the best NVIDIA Control Panel settings for low latency, why they matter, and what to leave alone so you don’t accidentally trade responsiveness for stutter or worse image quality.
Quick heads-up: for the lowest latency, your best combo is usually a mix of NVIDIA Control Panel + in-game settings + (optionally) NVIDIA Reflex.
But we’ll keep this focused on Control Panel, with a few “do this in-game too” notes where it really counts.
Before you change anything: set up a “Low Latency” profile per game
Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D settings.
You’ll see two tabs:
- Global Settings (applies to everything)
- Program Settings (per-game)
For low latency, I recommend:
- Keep Global fairly stable and safe.
- Do your serious low-latency tuning in Program Settings for the specific game you care about.
That way you don’t break weird games that don’t like aggressive settings.

- You’re playing esports titles
- You’re chasing maximum responsiveness
- You aren’t seeing new stutter or frame pacing weirdness
If Ultra makes the game feel “spiky” or stuttery, drop back to On.
If your game has NVIDIA Reflex, use Reflex in-game instead of relying solely on this setting. Reflex is usually the best option when available.
2) Power management mode: Prefer maximum performance

Best for low latency: Prefer maximum performance (in the game’s Program Settings)
This helps prevent your GPU from downclocking at bad moments. Downclocking can cause tiny delays and inconsistent frame times, which feels like “lag” even if your FPS looks fine.
Use this per-game so you’re not running max clocks on the desktop all day.
3) Vertical sync: depends on your setup (but don’t blindly enable it)

Use this decision tree:
If you have G-SYNC / FreeSync compatible display:
- NVIDIA Control Panel → Set up G-SYNC: enable it (if supported)

- Cap FPS to a little below refresh rate (example: 141 for 144Hz)
This gives smoothness with very good responsiveness when tuned right.
If you do NOT have VRR (no G-SYNC/FreeSync):
- For absolute lowest latency: V-Sync Off
- If tearing drives you insane: consider in-game options like “Fast Sync” (varies by game) or frame caps
Important: If you enable V-Sync in both control panel and in-game, you can increase latency and cause weird behavior. Pick one strategy and stick with it.
4) Maximum pre-rendered frames (if you see it): Use the default / let Low Latency Mode handle it
Some setups still expose older “pre-rendered frames” style settings. In most modern cases:
- Let Low Latency Mode do the work.
- Don’t fight it with conflicting settings.
Settings that help performance (and indirectly help latency)
Latency is basically the time between input → frame displayed. Higher FPS and better frame pacing usually help, but only if you don’t create new stutter.
5) Texture filtering – Quality: High performance (optional)

This can slightly reduce GPU load, which can improve frame times. The visual difference is usually minor in motion, but if you’re sensitive to image quality, use Quality and keep the rest of this guide.

10) Image Scaling / Sharpening / DSR: not latency tools
These can add GPU load or change frame time behavior. If you’re chasing latency, keep things simple.

In Program Settings for your game:
- Low Latency Mode: On (try Ultra if stable)
- Power management mode: Prefer maximum performance
- Vertical sync:
- G-SYNC setup: On (CP), Off in-game + FPS cap slightly below refresh
- No VRR: Off
- Triple buffering: Off
- Texture filtering – Quality: High performance (optional)
- Threaded optimization: Auto
- Shader Cache Size: Driver Default
- Max Frame Rate: Use only if you need a cap (VRR users: cap just below refresh)
That’s the practical sweet spot.
Extra tips that matter more than Control Panel (but worth mentioning)
- Enable NVIDIA Reflex in-game (if the game has it). Use “On” or “On + Boost” depending on the title.
- Disable “Enhance pointer precision” in Windows if you use mouse aim (it’s acceleration).
- Use exclusive fullscreen when available (varies by game).
- Make sure your display is set to its true refresh rate in Windows.
- If your CPU is maxed out, Control Panel tweaks won’t save you because CPU bottlenecks create latency.
How to know you improved latency (without fancy tools)
You’re looking for:
- Faster “snap” when aiming
- Less delay between click → shot
- More consistent micro-corrections (less floaty feel)
- Fewer frame-time spikes (stutter feels like lag)
If you want to be extra nerdy, you can use frame time graphs in tools like MSI Afterburner/Rivatuner, but honestly, your hands will usually tell you first.
