The Arbalist is Unicorn Overlord’s crossbow specialist, a ranged class that combines solid physickal damage with anti-flying effectiveness and poison afflictions.
Once promoted to Shieldshooter, this class gains a massive shield that transforms it from a squishy backline shooter into a surprisingly durable ranged tank.
It’s one of the most versatile ranged classes in the game.
Strengths
Arbalists have excellent accuracy and deal strong physickal damage at range.
Like Hunters, they’re effective against flying enemies, making them a reliable anti-air option.
What sets them apart from Hunters is their affliction capability.
Toxic Bolt inflicts poison on enemies, dealing damage over time that chips away at even tanky targets. Poison also bypasses defense, making it effective against armored enemies that would normally shrug off physical damage.
After promotion, Shieldshooters gain a greatshield, dramatically boosting physickal defense.
This is a huge deal, it lets you position them in the front row if needed, unlike most ranged classes that are fragile backliners.
A Shieldshooter can hold the frontline and shoot simultaneously.
Their leader effect, Ranged Assist, provides ranged support for nearby allied units.
Weaknesses
Before promotion, Arbalists are fragile and need back-row positioning. Even after promotion with the shield, their magick defense remains low.
They struggle against Clerics and Bishops who can heal through poison damage and cure afflictions, nullifying the Arbalist’s signature tool.
Their damage per hit is lower than Hunters, they compensate with afflictions rather than raw burst.
Key Skills and How to Use Them
Bolt Shot is the starting active, a reliable ranged attack with good accuracy and anti-flying bonus.
Toxic Bolt (level 10) is the signature skill, dealing damage and inflicting poison. Use this against tanky enemies to whittle them down with damage over time.
Heavy Bolt (level 20, Shieldshooter only) is a high-potency shot with guard-piercing properties. Excellent against shielded enemies.
Cover Shot is a passive that intercepts attacks aimed at allies, similar to Arrow Cover but from a crossbow. Useful for protecting squishier teammates.
Shield Guard (Shieldshooter passive) provides damage reduction when guarding, making the promoted class genuinely tanky.
Promotion to Shieldshooter
Promotion is excellent.
The greatshield access is a game-changer for survivability, Heavy Bolt adds offensive power, and Shield Guard provides real tankiness.
This is a worthwhile mid-priority promotion that dramatically changes how you can position the class.
Best Team Compositions and Tactics
Shieldshooter + Wizard/Witch is surprisingly effective. The Shieldshooter tanks the front while the caster nukes from behind. Unconventional but functional.
Arbalist + Fighter provides double ranged protection, the Fighter covers the Arbalist with Arrow Cover while the Arbalist covers other allies with Cover Shot.
Arbalist + Shaman combines poison from Toxic Bolt with the Shaman’s debuffs for complete enemy shutdown.
Position Arbalists in the back row before promotion. After promoting to Shieldshooter, you have the option to put them in the front row if your unit needs a ranged tank.
Characters Who Use This Class
Liza is the only named Arbalist, recruited during the Drakenhold desert missions alongside Magellan and Gloucester. She’s a solid ranged damage dealer with good accuracy.
Generic Arbalist mercenaries are available at forts.
Final Thoughts
The Arbalist/Shieldshooter is the most flexible ranged class in Unicorn Overlord.
Poison afflictions give it a tool against tanky enemies that pure damage dealers can’t match, and the Shieldshooter’s greatshield after promotion turns it into a ranged frontliner.
It’s not the highest damage ranged class, but it’s the most adaptable one. A great addition to any army that needs versatile ranged support.
