The Soldier is Unicorn Overlord’s versatile spear-wielding infantry class, a jack-of-all-trades that can pierce through enemy columns, provide healing support, and counter cavalry.

Once promoted to Sergeant, this class gains even stronger offensive tools and powerful support passives that make it a fantastic team player.

If you like units that do a little bit of everything, the Soldier/Sergeant is your pick.

Strengths

The Soldier’s signature ability is column-piercing attacks.

Skills like Long Thrust hit both the front and back row enemies in the same column, letting you bypass tanky frontliners to damage squishy targets hiding behind them like Clerics, Witches, and Shamans.

Very few classes can reach the back row with physical attacks this reliably.

Soldiers are also effective against cavalry.

Their spear attacks carry bonus damage against mounted units like Knights and Great Knights, making them a solid counter pick for cavalry-heavy enemy compositions.

On top of the offense, Soldiers bring genuine support utility.

First Aid provides passive healing to allies, and their valor skill Life Aid can revive fallen combatants within a unit.

After promotion, Life Aid II becomes an area-of-effect revival that can save multiple units, one of the best valor skills in the entire game.

Their leader effect, Quick Rest, reduces waiting time while resting, which helps your unit get back into the fight faster on the overworld.

Weaknesses

Soldiers have low defense and are quite squishy compared to frontline classes like Fighters or Hoplites. You generally want to position them in the back row to keep them alive, which means they’re relying on a tankier ally to absorb hits up front.

Their piercing attacks can be blocked by enemies with high guard rates, particularly Hoplites and Fighters.

If the enemy front row is stacked with armored shield users, your column-piercing attacks lose a lot of their effectiveness.

Soldiers also lack any real evasion or magick defense, so they’re vulnerable to just about everything if left exposed. They need proper unit composition to shine.

Key Skills and How to Use Them

Long Thrust is the starting active skill, hitting all enemies in the same column for 1 AP. It’s your bread and butter for reaching backline enemies.

Javelin (level 10) is a ranged throw that targets the back row directly and carries +50 bonus potency against flying units. Excellent for sniping fragile backliners or clipping Gryphon Knights.

Honed Spear (level 20, Sergeant only) is a powerful single-target attack with boosted potency when the Soldier has an active buff. Pair this with allies who apply buffs at the start of battle (like Vikings with War Horn) for maximum damage.

For passives, First Aid provides a small heal to an ally, giving the Soldier some off-healing utility. Keen Call (level 15) is a standout, it guarantees that the next ally attack is a critical hit. This is incredibly powerful when paired with heavy hitters like Gladiators or Swordfighters.

Active Gift (level 25, Sergeant only) grants 1 AP to an ally after they use an active skill, essentially giving your damage dealers extra actions. This is one of the best support passives in the game and a huge reason to promote.

The valor skill Life Aid / Life Aid II revives fallen combatants. After promotion it becomes AoE, making the Sergeant one of the best field medics in your army.

Promotion to Sergeant

Promotion unlocks Honed Spear and Active Gift, both of which significantly increase the class’s value.

The stat bumps are nice, and the extra AP and PP make a real difference for a class that juggles offense and support.

Active Gift alone makes promotion worthwhile, giving free AP to allies is absurdly strong.

The upgraded Life Aid II valor skill is also a game-changer for difficult maps where you need AoE revival.

Promote when you can, especially if the Soldier is in a unit with strong physical damage dealers who can exploit Keen Call and Active Gift.

Best Team Compositions and Tactics

Position the Soldier/Sergeant in the back row behind a proper tank.

Soldier + Hoplite/Legionnaire is a classic pairing. The Hoplite soaks all physical damage while the Soldier pierces columns and provides healing. Keen Call buffing the Hoplite’s counterattacks is a nice bonus.

Soldier + Gladiator/Berserker is fantastic. Keen Call guarantees crits on the Gladiator’s powerful row attacks, and Active Gift feeds them extra AP to keep swinging.

Soldier + Swordfighter is another great combo. The Swordfighter’s high crit rate stacks with Keen Call for devastating damage, and Active Gift keeps the Swordfighter attacking.

For tactics, set Long Thrust or Javelin to fire against columns with back-row targets, Keen Call to trigger before strong allies attack, and First Aid for reactive healing.

Characters Who Use This Class

Chloe is your first Soldier, joining alongside Alain at the very start. She’s a reliable pick throughout the game with balanced stats and access to the full Soldier/Sergeant skill set.

Gailey is a post-game Soldier who joins after completing “Dying Breath of an Empire Fallen.” He’s a late addition but gives you a second named Soldier option for endgame content.

Elgor is also recruitable post-game and starts as a Soldier, though he’s primarily known for his story role in Bastorias.

Generic Soldier mercenaries can be hired at forts as well.

Final Thoughts

The Soldier/Sergeant doesn’t dominate any single role, but it fills gaps like no other class can.

Column-piercing attacks, cavalry effectiveness, passive healing, guaranteed crits for allies, free AP generation, and AoE revival, this class does everything. It’s the ultimate support-damage hybrid and a fantastic addition to almost any unit that needs a versatile back-row member.
