The Hoplite is Unicorn Overlord’s ultimate physickal defense tank, a spear-and-greatshield wall of armor that absorbs punishment and protects allies.

Once promoted to Legionnaire, it gains row-wide protection buffs and becomes even harder to bring down.

If you need an immovable object on your front line, this is the class that delivers.

Strengths

Hoplites have the highest physickal defense and guard rate of any class in the game.

Nothing else even comes close.

Combined with their massive HP pool, Hoplites can absorb an absurd amount of physical damage before going down.

Their Heavy Cover passive lets them intercept attacks aimed at weaker allies, functioning as a true bodyguard.

This makes squishy backline units like Wizards and Shamans much safer when a Hoplite is standing in front of them.

After promotion, Legionnaires gain Row Protection, which buffs an entire row of allies with +50% defense. Greatshield is another powerful addition, it buffs the Legionnaire’s own defense by 50% and generates 2 extra PP, fueling more passive activations.

The leader effect, Resist Ranged Assist, reduces ranged assist damage to almost nothing, same as the Fighter.

Weaknesses

Magick is the Hoplite’s kryptonite.

Their magick defense is essentially nonexistent, literally one of the lowest in the game.

Spells are unblockable, so all that physickal defense and guard rate does absolutely nothing against Wizards, Witches, and other casters.

Overlapping enemy magick assists can actually kill a Hoplite before the battle even starts.

Warriors and Breakers are also devastating counters.

Their anti-armor skills ignore defense entirely, making the Hoplite’s signature stat completely irrelevant.

Hoplites also have abysmal initiative, evasion, and mobility.

They’re slow to act, slow to move on the overworld, and can’t dodge anything. They’re a pure stationary wall.

Key Skills and How to Use Them

Long Thrust is the starting active, it pierces a column of enemies, similar to the Soldier. Decent damage that can reach backline targets.

Heavy Bash (level 10) attacks a single enemy and has high potency with a chance to stun. Good for locking down priority targets.

Greatshield (level 20, Legionnaire only) grants +50% defense to the user and generates 2 PP. This is incredible for self-sustain, the PP fuels Heavy Cover and other passives.

Heavy Cover is the defining passive. It lets the Hoplite take an attack aimed at an ally, absorbing the damage with their massive defense. Keep this equipped always.

Row Protection (level 25, Legionnaire only) buffs a row of allies with +50% defense at the start of battle. This is one of the strongest defensive buffs in the game and protects your entire frontline.

Promotion to Legionnaire

Absolutely promote this class.

Greatshield and Row Protection are both exceptional skills that elevate the Hoplite from “good tank” to “best physickal tank in the game.”

The extra AP and PP from promotion also matter a lot for a class that needs PP to keep Heavy Cover active.

This is a mid-priority promotion that pays off immediately.

Best Team Compositions and Tactics

Hoplite + Wizard or Witch is a classic combo. The Hoplite walls physical damage while the caster nukes from behind. Just avoid enemy compositions that have casters of their own.

Hoplite + Radiant Knight covers the Hoplite’s magick weakness. The Radiant Knight provides magick barriers and high magick defense, creating a unit that’s resistant to both damage types.

Hoplite + Gladiator works because the Hoplite absorbs everything while the Gladiator maintains full HP for bonus damage.

Hoplite + Shaman/Druid is a great control setup. The Hoplite tanks while the Shaman debuffs enemies into helplessness.

Always place Hoplites in the front row. Set Greatshield to fire early for the defense buff and PP generation, and let Heavy Cover and Row Protection activate freely.

Characters Who Use This Class

Hodrick is your first Hoplite, joining during the early Cornia missions. He’s reliable and available for the entire game.

Bryce is a Legionnaire recruited during the Battle of Solvaquad in Bastorias. He joins already promoted, making him immediately useful.

Hermann is another Hoplite option available through Drakenhold missions.

Beaumont is a post-game Hoplite who joins after completing “Dying Breath of an Empire Fallen.”

Generic Hoplite mercenaries can be hired at forts.

Final Thoughts

The Hoplite/Legionnaire is the definitive physickal tank in Unicorn Overlord.

Nothing survives physical damage better, and Row Protection after promotion means your entire frontline benefits from its presence.

The magick weakness is severe and must be planned around, but if you can keep casters away from your Hoplite, it will hold the line through anything the game throws at you.
